The Power of Birth Affirmations

Birth Affirmations: A Powerful Tool for Labor

Being a birth doula means carrying a wide variety of coping tools to support my clients in labor. One of my favorites, and one I introduce to clients early on, is affirmations. In this post, I’ll share what birth affirmations are, the psychology behind why they work, and a few of my personal favorites that I use. I’ll also link the affirmation deck I bring to every birth!

What Are Birth Affirmations?

Birth affirmations are positive, empowering statements repeated during pregnancy and labor to build confidence, calm fears, and promote a positive mindset. During my prenatal visits, I encourage parents to choose affirmations that resonate with them and start practicing early.

This can look like:

  • Writing affirmations on sticky notes and placing them around the house
  • Listening to affirmation meditations in the car
  • Creating a bedtime ritual centered around affirmations

Because affirmations are so personal, the best ones are those that make you pause and really feel them. I still remember the one that spoke so deeply to me:

“The power and intensity of my contractions cannot be stronger than me because it is me.”

Why Affirmations Work

There’s a strong connection between the mind and body. When your thoughts are calm and focused, your body often follows. Psychology tells us that our brains are wired to look for evidence to support our beliefs. If you believe you’re unlucky, for example, your brain will naturally pay more attention to things that reinforce that belief.

The same principle works in a positive direction: if you tell yourself you are capable of giving birth, your brain will search for proof of that truth. Affirmations help reframe your experience, shifting your inner narrative from fear to confidence. They can remind you that you are strong, that you are safe, and that your body knows what to do.

Some of My Favorite Birth Affirmations

Here are a few affirmations I’ve collected and shared with clients over the years. See if any of these resonate with you:

“Work to stay rooted in the birth that is unfolding, not the one you had planned in your head.”

“I am surrounded by love and support as I embark on this sacred journey.”

“It’s okay to have a plan, and it’s okay if that plan has to change.”

“My body opens, my mind quiets, my baby descends.”

“Thousands of people are birthing with me around the world right now.”

A Resource I Love

If you’re looking for even more affirmations, I highly recommend the In Full Bloom affirmation deck. I use this deck with clients during prenatal visits to help them choose the words that resonate most. Then, I bring the cards to births and place them around the birthing space, both as encouragement and as beautiful, grounding reminders. The artist behind the deck also creates lovely prints that add a calming, intentional touch to any birth environment.

In Conclusion

Birth affirmations are more than just words. They’re a way to anchor yourself in strength, calm, and trust during one of life’s most powerful transitions. Whether you write them on sticky notes, repeat them during contractions, or fill your birth space with them, they can be a steady reminder of your capacity to do hard and beautiful things. My hope is that you find an affirmation that feels like it was written just for you, and that it carries you through your birth with confidence and peace.
